Student Safety—Reporting Abuse, Neglect, or Injury

Applicability

 

This policy applies to all SSD employees.

 

Policy

 

ALL SSD EMPLOYEES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS.

 

Any employee who suspects or witnesses student abuse or neglect is required to report it IMMEDIATELY to the supervisor or to Security. The supervisor or Security should contact direct care staff immediately.

 

The witness, and the supervisor or security staff who receives notice of possible abuse or neglect, is expected to take reasonable action to stop any imminent danger, to contact direct care staff to take responsibility for the student as soon as possible. For example,

 

 

 

 

Direct care staff, whose job it is to provide services directly to students, including teachers, paraeducators, therapists, and dorm staff, receive special training in identifying and handling abuse, neglect, and injuries, and they are expected to act in accordance with that training.

 

Reporting Injuries

 

A supervisor or security staff who receives a report that a student is injured must report the injury to a nurse. The nursing staff will be responsible for treating, documenting, and reporting injuries.

 

Reports to Child or Adult Protection Agencies

 

Reports to outside agencies, including law enforcement or the Department of Children and Family Services, must also be reported to the School Director, as soon as possible after the report is made.
